Bob Dylan has always had an interesting, shifting relationship to the zeitgeist. As is well-documented (including in the new film A Complete Unknown), in the early-to-mid 60s he was relentlessly ahead of the curve, spawning the careers of hundreds of literary-minded singer-songwriters when he plugged in that guitar at the Newport Folk Festival. At other points, he’s been chasing trends (the dangly earrings, synths and drum machines of the 80s) or rejecting them entirely to experiment with jazz scat vocals or the Great American Songbook.

Now, in the year 2025, Bob Dylan again finds himself late to the cultural party, joining the social media platform TikTok days before a US government ban will supposedly come into place.
